Pure Copper Cables vs. Copper Clad Aluminum Cables

One of the common tactics of some manufacturers to save cost is to use aluminum instead of copper for the core of the cable. This can lead to issues with your network transmitting and receiving data from having inferior materials that are less durable. It is not easy to tell the difference between them especially from a visual inspection. 

 

The safety and performance safety of cables made with aluminum can violate IEC and TIA standards for Cat5 and Cat6 cables. CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum also known as CCE for Copper Clad Ethernet) can have higher attenuation leading to loss of packet data resulting in slower network because of re-transmissions. Aluminum cables are compounded by the fact that they are less resistant to heat, and can cause issues for installers as fail much easier when bent or pulled. Make sure you use pure copper cables.

The Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) includes requirements for CE marking of cables for Safety in the Event of Fire. This impacts all cables that are being used as a Construction product as part of the Construction Products Regulation (CPR No. 305/2011). The inclusion of EN 50575, “Power, control and communication cables – Cables for general applications in construction works subject to reaction to fire requirements" in the OJEU provides the standard that all cabling must meet to achieve a CE mark for certain fire performance categories.
