Overview on IT Equipment Racks

A Quick Overview on IT Equipment Racks

IT Equipment Racks come if different types and styles for different uses.

There is an Enclosure style Cabinet – primarily used in Data Centers and Server Rooms.

There is Open Frame Post – Also used in Data Centers, and Wall Mount /Cabinet style, for use in smaller spaces typically in Classrooms, Retail and public locations. Shown below.

Racks are measured in Rack Units - A rack unit, U or RU is a unit of measure for the height of electronic equipment designed to mount in a rack. One rack unit is typically 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) high.

• The 19 inches (482.60 mm) reflects the width of the equipment mounting frame in the rack including the frame.

• One rack unit is typically 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) high.

• Equipment designed for racks is typically 17.25 in (438 mm) wide.

• The height of rack mounted equipment is frequently described as a number in "U". For example, one rack unit is often referred to as "1U", 2 rack units as "2U" and so on.

• A typical full size rack is 42U, which means it holds just over 6 feet (1.8 m) of equipment and can hold up to 42 rack units.

• The rack mounting depth is important to make sure your equipment can fit. Dell, HP, and IBM all make servers ~30” (762mm) in depth. Racks designed for servers can be 42” (1066.8mm) or even larger to accommodate for cables, etc.

Rack Holes

Rack equipment attaches to racks via the rack holes. Three types of rack holes are available in racks. Threaded, Round, and Square.

• Square holes allow equipment to easily latch to the lip allowing ease and flexibility in installation.

• Equipment not designed for square hole racks can still be used by simply using cage nuts that will fit in square hole rack rails.

• All V7 Racks use Square Holes and include cage nuts

Back Breaking Loads

If your backpack is too heavy you could be hurting yourself.

It’s more common than you may think. There are over 2,000 backpack related injuries each year and over half of people carry loads that are excessive.

Is your pack too heavy?

If you experience any of these symptoms, take some of that weight off.

• Hard to put back pack on or take off

• Experience back pain

• Get tingling or numbness in your back

• Have strap marks on your shoulders

If your backpack is too heavy your body will strain to compensate for the extra weight on your back.

You may be leaning to far forward causing you to potentially lose your balance and fall more easily. You may also be putting too much weight on the natural curve of your back, causing muscle strain.

It is recommended by medical professionals that you should carry no more than 10% of your body weight on your back to reduce the potential for injury and fatigue.

So, for example a 10 year old weighing 70lbs. should carry no more than 7 lbs. in their backpack, or a college student weighing 175lbs –should be carrying no more than 17.5lbs.

Here’s a couple of simple tips on packing your backpack. Take only the essentials. Books can weight 2-3 pounds and snacks and drinks add a few more pounds. If you’re not going to use it that day don’t pack it. Your backpack is not a storage locker.

Place heavy items low and closest to your back. Lighter items should be in pouches and higher towards your shoulders. Always lift with your legs, not your back. Lift straight up and don’t shift while lifting.

Use both straps so that the weight can be distributed evenly. Padded straps and back pads can help reduce friction and rubbing. Make sure to not overload your pack today to save your back tomorrow.

What's the Difference between Hard Drive (HDD) and newer SSD?

What’s the difference between SSD and Mechanical HDD?

What’s the difference between SSD and Mechanical HDD? The simple answer is that SSD has no moving parts and functions similarly to USB memory sticks, while the Mechanical HDD has a magnetic tape and a lot of moving parts. SSD is also considerably smaller and takes up less space in a PC case, in some instances even mounted directly to the motherboard. SSD is also way faster – 10 times faster than an HDD.

What is SSD Storage?

SSD stands for Solid State Drive, and it’s like an oversized, more sophisticated version of a USB memory stick. Like a USB memory drive, there are no moving parts, and the data is stored in microchips. Storing data on a chip is what makes the SSD so much faster. A typical SSD uses what is called NAND-based flash memory, which is a non-volatile type of memory. A non-volatile memory is that it will not forget where the data is store when the disk is off. An SSD does not have any mechanical components to read and write data, instead it relies on an embedded processor called a controller to perform operations related to reading and writing data. The controller is a very important factor in determining the SSD read and write speed. As the controller will make decision to where it will store, retrieve, cache and clean up data that can determine the overall SSD performance.

What is HDD Storage?

Hard Disk Drives or HDD, was first introduced by IBM in 1956 and uses magnetism to store data on a rotating platter. A read/write head floats above the spinning platter reading and writing the data. The faster the platter spins, the faster an HDD can perform, a typical laptop drives today spin at either 5400 RPM ( revolutions per minute) or 7200 RPM, though some server based models are up to 15,000 RPM.

When it comes to appearance, the most common size for laptop hard drive is 2.5” form factor while a larger 3.5” form factor is used in desktop computers. The larger size allows for more platters inside and thus creating a larger storage capacity.

This chart breaks down the major factors of storage between HDD and SSD.

Less power draw, averages 2 – 3 watts, resulting in 30+ minute battery boost

More power draw, averages 6 – 7 watts and therefore uses more battery

SSD wins this category as it draws less power and result better battery life for mobile devices

Cost

Expensive, roughly $0.08 per gigabyte (based on buying a 1TB drive)

Only around $0.03 per gigabyte, very cheap (buying a 4TB model)

HDD wins this category, but HDD will soon lose this category as new QLC NAND technology will be releasing toward end of the year and will release SSD that are about $0.03 per gigabyte

Capacity

Operating System Boot Time

Around 10-13 seconds average bootup time

Around 30-40 seconds average bootup time

SSD wins this category as it boots a computer 2x faster and will not slow down, as HDD will slow down when its ages

Noise

There are no moving parts and as such no sound

SSD wins this category as there are no moving part and no noise

Vibration

No vibration as there are no moving parts

The spinning of the platters can sometimes result in vibration

SSD wins this category as HDD can be very fragile and can brick if it was drop

Heat Produced

Lower power draw and no moving parts so little heat is produced

SSD wins this category as the failure rate is lower as there are no moving parts

File Copy / Write Speed

Generally, above 200 MB/s and up to 550 MB/s for cutting edge drives

The range can be anywhere from 50 – 120MB / s

SSD wins this category as SSD is 10x faster for transferring and booting the OS

Encryption

Full Disk Encryption (FDE) Supported on some models

File Opening Speed

Up to 30% faster than HDD

Magnetism Affected?

An SSD is safe from any effects of magnetism

Magnets can erase data

SSD wins this category as there are no magnetic parts that would corrupt any data

Now if we tally up the total, the winning category is SSD with 9. This means that SSD will be the replacement technology for all HDD in the near future. As new technology is being released, lower capacity SSD will be cheaper than a standard HDD and will be at the same price point. By that time, there will be no benefit to choose an SSD over an HDD.

V7 will be launching a complete line of SSD products in the next few months so stay tuned for more. For more information contact v7bids@ingrammicro.com.

V7 Ethernet Cables - The clear winner

V7 RJ-45 Ethernet Cables keep your network running smooth

If you are getting ready to purchase Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat7 RJ-45 Ethernet network cables, of course you’ll want to make sure the ones you are choose offer quality, durability and performance.

Pure Copper Cables vs. Copper Clad Aluminum Cables

One of the common tactics of some manufacturers to save cost is to use aluminum instead of copper for the core of the cable. This can lead to issues with your network transmitting and receiving data from having inferior materials that are less durable. It is not easy to tell the difference between them especially from a visual inspection.

The safety and performance safety of cables made with aluminum can violate IEC and TIA standards for Cat5 and Cat6 cables. CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum also known as CCE for Copper Clad Ethernet) can have higher attenuation leading to loss of packet data resulting in slower network because of re-transmissions. Aluminum cables are compounded by the fact that they are less resistant to heat, and can cause issues for installers as fail much easier when bent or pulled. Make sure you use pure copper cables.

How Loud is Too Loud?

How Loud is Too Loud?

Of the roughly 40 million Americans suffering from hearing loss, 10 million can be attributed to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL can be caused by a one-time exposure to loud sound as well as by repeated exposure to sounds at various loudness levels over an extended period. Damage happens to the microscopic cells found inside the cochlea part of the inner-ear. These cells respond to mechanical sound vibrations by sending an electrical signal to the auditory nerve. The healthy human ear can hear frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 20,000 Hz, and different groups of these cells are responsible for different frequencies (rate of vibrations). Over time, the cell’s hair-like stereocilia may get damaged or broken and if enough of them are damaged, hearing loss results. The high frequency area of the cochlea is often damaged by loud sound.

How is Sound measured?

The energy in a sound wave is measured in Decibels (dB). Like a temperature scale, the decibel scale goes below zero. The average person can hear sounds down to about 0 dB, the level of rustling leaves. Some people with very good hearing can hear sounds down to -15 dB. But if sound reaches beyond 85 dB it can cause permanent damage to your hearing. The longer you listen to a sound at high dB will affects how much damage it may cause. Low range sounds may be listened to safely, they will cause damage even over extended periods, but exposure to even some common sounds may cause permanent damage. And extended exposure to sounds above 85 dB can cause permanent damage to the cells in your inner ear, leading to hearing loss.

Many common sounds may be louder than you think…

A typical conversation occurs at 60 dB – not loud enough to cause damage.

An idlingdiesel engine is loud enough at 85 dB to cause permanent damage after only 1 workday (8 hours).

When listening to a personal music system with stock earphones at a maximum volume, the sound generated can reach a level well over 100 dBA, loud enough to begin causing permanent damage after just 15 minutes per day!

Decibel Exposure Time Guidelines

Recent studies suggested that nearly 50 percent of teens and young adults get exposed to unsafe volume levels from mobile devices. And 40% of that is potentially damaging levels of sound. That’s over 1 billion people at risk, which is why setting a volume limit is probably a good idea.

Some studies have found that people in their 20s have hearing loss more typical of people aged 50 years and older because of exposure to music at this volume.

For every 3 dB over 85dB, the permissible exposure time before possible damage can occur is cut in half. - Recommended permissible exposure time for continuous time weighted average noise, according to NIOSH and the CDC, 2002.

FAQS

– Do manufacturers provide info indicating how loud their devices actually are?

Audio devices and mobile phones including iPhone have a sound level of 100 dB or louder. iPhones can produce a maximum of 115 decibels (software limits European iPods to 100 dB; U.S. models have been measured higher), the equivalent of attending a rock concert amplification.

– Does loudness vary a great deal from one brand/model to another?

The output levels across various brands of models tested are about the same, especially in the high decibel output. Apple’s iPhone iOS and the latest versions of Android OS have a ‘safe volume’ warning built into their software.

– What about the headset, over the ear vs. ear buds; is one less damaging than the other?

It can depend on how loud you set the volume and for how long you listen to that volume. Despite their inclusion with every mobile phone, researchers stress caution when using earbuds.

Because of their ‘in-ear’ design, earbuds are more likely to cause hearing damage than headphones that sit on or over the ear. They can also be up to 9 dB louder than over-the-ear headphones. This isn't a big deal when going from 40 to 50 dB, but more serious when going from 70 to 80.

– How loud is too loud when the volume control doesn’t provide information on the output level?

A rule of thumb is if you cannot understand someone talking to you in a normal speaking voice when they are an arm’s length away… it’s probably too loud. This rule works with standard earbuds and headphone.

– Is there a rule of thumb about setting limits on the volume wheel?

Since the combination of volume and length of listening can cause hearing loss, researchers recommend applying the 60/60 rule. This rule suggests listening to an iPhone for 60 minutes at 60 percent of its maximum volume, then taking a break. Ears that get a rest have time to recover and are less likely to be permanently damaged. No more than 30 minutes at the 80% volume.

– Loud music damages the nerves in the brain

Loud music on headphones has the same effect on nerves as multiple sclerosis and causes hearing loss.

Loud music played on earphones causes hearing loss by having a similar effect on nerves as multiple sclerosis, research finds. The research shows that noise levels above 110 decibels strip insulation from nerve fibers carrying signals from the ear to the brain. Loss of the protective coating, called myelin, disrupts electrical nerve signals.

The same process, this time due to an attack from the immune system, damages nerves in the brain and results in multiple sclerosis.

It is well known that loud noises can lead to hearing problems such as temporary hearing loss or tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and even permanent hearing loss. But this is the first-time scientists have been able to identify damages to nerve cells as a result of noise exposure.

"The research allows us to understand the pathway from exposure to loud noises to hearing loss. Dissecting the cellular mechanisms underlying this condition is likely to bring a very significant healthcare benefit to a wider population. The work will help prevention as well as progression into finding appropriate cures for hearing loss", said the lead researcher Dr. Martine Hamann, from the University of Leicester in the UK.

Hearing can recover

Scientists found that myelin loss, as a result of noise exposure, re-grows in time, meaning hearing can recover.

The work is part of ongoing research into the effects of loud noises on the cochlea nucleus, a brainstem region that receives sound signals from the inner ear. Based on these results, scientists may be able to develop a future treatment method.

We at V7 are working on adding volume control limitations to headsets made for the education sector. This will help limit some of the early exposure of damaging sound levels. As part of our constant effort to bring our customers high-quality products with top features for less than the competition.

The results have been published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

HD, 2K, 4K – What does it all mean?

HD, 2K, 4K – What does it all mean?

Monitors are in more sizes today than ever before. But with all the resolutions to choose from – which one is right for you? Lets’ start with the basics – screens are made up of pixels. A Pixel is basically a point on a monitor that is composed of 3 dots Red, Blue, and Green.

And the term Resolution refers to how many pixels are on the screen both horizontal and vertical.

The standard from a few years ago was 720P, nowadays we’ve gone way past that.

720 x 1280 — HD is 720p

1920 x 1080 — FHD is 1080p

2560 x 1440 — QHD (Quad HD) is 2K 1440p

3840 x 2160 — UHD (Ultra HD) is 4K 2160p

Also, as monitor physical sizes have increased the need for more resolution has also increased.

This is because of the number of pixels needed to create sharp imagery. The term PPI or Pixels Per Inch basically measures pixel density. The higher the PPI the more pixels make up any image and create a sharper visual.

The benefit of a larger screen and higher resolution is that images onscreen are sharper and you can fit more windows and programs on-screen for increased productivity. For anyone using graphics or video programs this is a no-brainer, but even spreadsheets and web browsing is enhanced with greater resolution displays.

For all your monitor needs – look no further than V7 Ingram Micro.

What is the difference between DDR3 and DDR4 RAM?

What is the difference between DDR3 and DDR4 RAM?

First, what is RAM ?

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is your computer’s short term memory or cache. When the computer needs information and does not find it in the RAM, it then tries the hard drive to retrieve the data, which is a much slower process. Many older PCs that feel sluggish can increase performance by adding more RAM or switching to higher capacity RAM. Yet, capacity is only one specification based on the computer. RAM is also available in variety of versions and speeds. A 2GB stick of DDR2 800 RAM is not the same thing as a 2GB stick of DDR3 1333 RAM. Its important to understand the difference because computers only accept certain types of RAM based on Motherboard.

What does DDR stand for?

The term “DDR” stands for Double Data Rate. This term came into use when the first Double Data Rate Ram modules arrived. DDR RAM is capable of two data transfers per clock cycle, which gives the theoretical peak bandwidth of previous SDRAM while running at the same clock speed.

How can you tell the difference between speeds, DDR3, and DDR4?

The DRAM modules have different shapes, and the pin-out will only fit on the mother board based on the recommend memory that the manufacturer. As DDR4 will only work in DDR4 compatible motherboards and DDR3 will only fit in DDR3 compatible motherboards. The speed is backward compatible but will need the motherboard to be compatible. In other words, if you buy a 2666 MHz memory module, and the motherboard can only support 2133 MHz, the memory will go down to 2133 MHz.

A comparison for the RAM memory chipsets can be found in today’s computer which includes SDR, DDR, DDR2 and future DDR3 modules:

In the future when memory speeds increase to DDR5, there will be an increase in "clock speed" which means a faster data transfer rate and improved system performance.

For all your DRAM memory needs – V7 Ingram Micro has you covered.
